Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
and Cardiff University, Wales in UK, have entered into a collaboration to
encourage cooperation in the fields of science and technology, which includes
biotechnology and pharmaceutical sciences.
The two institutions were in
discussion in 2002 and the collaboration is a culmination of this initiative for
the common advantage for both centres of learning. "This partnership with IISc
is a strategic decision that will be mutually beneficial to both the
institutions," state Prof. Hywel Thomas, Head, Cardiff School.
The university has established
itself as one of the leading educational institutions in the UK whose global
inclination was a result of links with other international institutions, an
international student base, important exchange programme and associations with
commercial organisations across the world.
Prof. Thomas said the recent
announcement by the Indian Government on the allocations of funds for investment
in IISc to develop it along the lines of leading global institutions of higher
education and research & developments organisations has further reinforced
IISc's potential to be one of India's and the world's most recognised
organisations.
The MoU will lead to
collaboration in research and exchange of scientists from the two organisations,
exchange of students and information sharing of ongoing research activities.
More than 2,000 active
researchers are currently working in IISc in almost all areas of science and
technology. Cardiff University is recognised in independent government
assessment as one of Britain's leading teaching and research universities.
Founded by the Royal Charter in
1183, the University's expertise in research and research led teaching includes
science and health. The student population is drawn from a variety of
backgrounds spread across Wales, rest of UK and outside. Currently the
international students comprise 17 percent of the University's total student
population.
