Metropolis Health to foray abroad
The Mumbai-based Metropolis Health Services (India), a Rs. 45 crore group which runs chain of clinical diagnostic centers across the country, has decided to go global. Metropolis, touted as the largest service provider of its kind in the country, is now planning to foray into the SAARC region, West Asia, Africa and UK.
The company is already setting up clinical diagnostic centers in Tanzania and Dubai, while similar plans for Sri Lanka and Nepal are in an advanced stage. “ We will build the Dubai unit as there feral laboratory for the entire West Asian market. Similarly the Tanzania unit would act as there feral center for east and sub Saharan Africa, “Dr. Sushil Shah chairman of the company, told ET.
“Our targets are to achieve a turnover of Rs. 100 crore by 2006 of which around 20% would be from the international units, “Dr. Shah added. Metropolis became India’s largest chain of pathology diagnostic centers with the recent acquisitions of Sudharma Laboratory in Kerala and Lister Laboratory in Tamil Nadu. The company specializes in the disciplines of endocrinology, immunology, molecular biology, haematology and biochemistry.
On the daily routine, he said, the company’s vehicles reach the hospitals and collect the waste , segregate and then transport the waste to the company’s facilities where it gets disposed either through incineration (High Temperature Combustion to destroy organic wastes) or auto clave (sterilization, by killing organisms).
The company has been able to take care of over 3 tunnes of medical waste in Hyderabad, which is nearly half of the total medical waste generated by the city, every day. Medicare earns on bed/day basis, Reddy added.

Medicare Incin to set up bio-medical waste facilities in four cities
The Hyderabad-based Medicare incin, a Ramky group company is setting up five new Bio-Medical Waste Management facilities one each at Amritsar, Kolkata, Madurai, Mangalore and Salem with a total investment of Rs. 10 crore, with each facility costing Rs. 2 crore.
The construction at all the sites is in progress and the facilities will be in operation by October, 2004, M Goutham Reddy, director, Medicare Incin told this newspaper.
It has already set up such facilities in eight cities in the country, which include Ahmedabad, Banglore, Chennai, Ghaziabad, Howrah, Hyderabad, Ludhiana and Mumbai. It aims at taking the number to 25-30 in the future.
When asked about the criteria of choosing certain cities, he explained the population has been the key indicator. The company has found it viable to set up the facilities in all those cities, which have a capacity of 6000 beds. And other key factors have been the Government’s initiatives and the size of the city.
He added, as of today, Medicare serves about 500 establishments just in Hyderabad. And about 13,000 beds of inpatients are taken care on a daily basis. And at national level, it serves 7000 institution covering 80,000 beds of inpatients every day. The company has made agreement with Andhra Pradesh Hospitals and Nursing Homes Association (APNA) because of which it has received a good response at Hyderabad.
